A number of 1,358 calls have been placed in the past 24 hours with the Bucharest - Ilfov Ambulance Service (SABIF), service manager Alis Grasu told agerpres.
"There were 1,358 calls in 24 hours, 675 of which were emergencies. Of the latter - 129 were public emergencies, including 27 cases of heat-related dizziness and 14 cases of fainting," Alis Grasu said.
Fifteen counties in western Romania are under a Code Orange heat and thermal discomfort warning beginning this Wednesday, with the heat wave expected to progressively get the entire country in grip, the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) announced.
"Wednesday and Thursday (August 2 and 3) the heat wave will intensify and will engulf the entire country. The weather will be scorching hot, the temperature-humidity index will generally lie above the critical 80-unit threshold and local nocturnal temperature lows will stay above 20 degrees Celsius. In Banat, Crisana, Maramures, most of Transylvania and south-western Oltenia, the thermal discomfort will be particularly pronounced and temperatures will get as high as 36 and 39 degrees Celsius," said ANM.
For the rest of the country, the weather forecasters issued a Code Yellow heat warning as significant discomfort and temperature highs between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius are expected in northeastern and eastern Oltenia, southeastern Transylvania, Moldova, Muntenia and Dobrogea, the meteorologists said.
