The EU-Mercosur trade agreement will mark a step forward in the development of business across the European Union, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR) Mihai Daraban told the Romania-Brazil Business Forum on Thursday.

CCIR hosted on Thursday the second edition of the Romania-Brazil Business Forum, bringing together representatives from over 35 Brazilian companies across 25 different sectors with their Romanian counterparts. The event served as a platform dedicated to strengthening bilateral economic relations, according to a CCIR press release.

One of the key discussion topics at the business forum was the trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur, the regional trading bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

"At the level of Eurochambres, the Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry, we have already decided to support the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. We are aware that certain countries have expressed concerns regarding the implementation of this agreement, but competition should not be feared. Everyone wants to be the sole player on the market when producing something, but evidently, that is not possible. I am firmly convinced that the EU-Mercosur trade agreement will be a step forward in the development of business across the European Union," Daraban is quoted aforementioned release as saying.

Also present at the event, Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Romania Ricardo Guerra de Araujo highlighted that there is "quite a bit of misunderstanding" surrounding this trade agreement.

"In the agricultural sector in particular, several countries have expressed fears that the market will be flooded with agricultural products from South America. I do not share this view; the opportunities and benefits stemming from this agreement will outweigh the challenges certain economic sectors may face. Currently, trade between Romania and Brazil stands at under 500 million euros, while the real potential amounts to one billion euros annually," the Brazilian ambassador said.
