Romania's Defence Minister Mihai Fifor on Wednesday welcomed ambassador of Hungary in Bucharest Botond Zakonyi, as well as Chinese ambassador Xu Feihong.
At the meeting with the Zakonyi, Fifor discussed bilateral and regional cooperation between the two national armies, public defence spending, regional security, as well as cooperation inside NATO and the European Union.
"The two officials highlighted the existing good cooperation, materialised by activities conducted by the Romanian-Hungarian Joint Peacekeeping Battalion and the Multinational Engineer Battalion TISA, underlining the importance of developing cooperation along these dimensions in order to ensure the interoperability of the armed forces," the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) reported in a press statement released on Wednesday.
At the same time, interest was reiterated in intensified defence cooperation between Romania and Hungary, given that the two countries play a key role in managing stability challenges in their geographical region.
Prospects for cooperation were also discussed in order to prepare for the centennial of Romania's Greater Union of December 1, 1918.
Fifor and the Chinese ambassador in Bucharest Xu Feihong had an exchange of views on topics of shared interest, with emphasis on prospects for bilateral defence co-operation.
"Discussed in this context were ways of intensifying collaboration, including in terms of staff training, training for peacekeeping missions, joint exercises, military education and military medicine, as well as the contribution with forces and capabilities in UN peacekeeping missions," the statement says.
Fifor and Xu agreed on the need to continue the political and military dialogue at the level of defence ministries.
