Defence Minister Adrian Tutuianu stated on Friday that economic development represents the primary solution for national security, which is why he supports the creation of joint ventures to produce in Romania the necessary components for the army endowment.
"We will discuss today with the Ministry of Economy to identify new opportunities for cooperation in the national industry. We are interested in developing partnerships with defence industry companies. (...) We want to set up mixed capital companies to produce in Romania, the necessary components for national defence and to ensure our economic development. I believe that the economic development is the main solution for the national security," Tutuianu told a press conference.
He also presented the stage of the acquisitions, noting that the procedures will be sped up including through legislative proposals to be submitted in Parliament in autumn.
"We currently have active procurement procedures on the following levels: 173 transportation trucks for troops, 131 million lei estimated worth, without VAT. The deadline for submitting bids is September 6, the delivery of the trucks will take place 11 months form the contract award. We will also acquire 48 ambulances amounting to 13,248,000 lei to be delivered within four months of the award of the contract (...) There are ongoing procurement procedures for ammunition worth 12,400,000 lei. The procurement of minibuses and buses is underway. We are expecting their delivery," said Tutuianu, specifying that the ministry will also purchase protective equipment for servicemen, from vest to headphones and goggles.
