The new fiscal and budgetary measures have challenged the old paradigms and brought to the surface things that had existed so far in the education system, Minister of Education and Research Daniel David said on Thursday in Parliament, in a conference organised by the National Federation of Parents EDUPART.

"The fiscal and budgetary measures have challenged the old paradigms, they have brought to the surface things that we have had so far, and it is time to decide whether or not to change the paradigms in the coming years," David said.

According to the minister, the education system in Romania is one "with lights and shadows."

"In general, our education system is problematic when 50% of children are in the area of functional illiteracy. That tells me that the current system can no longer continue as is. (...) We need to change paradigms. (...) The fiscal and budgetary measures have managed to save salaries and scholarships for this year, and we have created financial mechanisms so that we can ask for money for education in the coming years, without anyone telling us that it is impossible," the minister said.

In his opinion, the mergers were made quickly, and the reorganisation phase of the school network is currently underway.

"This mess with the crowding of classes no longer lasts," said the minister.

In his opinion, increasing the teacher workload by two hours for teachers does not represent a drastic change.

As for the good performance scholarships, David said that they should be awarded to reward those who learn well and who like to learn.

"70% of the children had, at some point, at least one type of scholarship. (...) Scholarships are not given to pay children to come to school or to pay them to study well. The scholarships are given to help children come to school and to reward those who learn well and who like to learn."

"If we don't make the paradigm shifts, what will things look like in about ten years? (...) I think that teaching from the same curricular area is a good thing," David added.
