Enescu Festival: Tonhalle Orchestra to perform Mahler's Symphony No. 2 on its second evening at Palace Hall

The Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich, conducted by Paavo Järvi, will perform on Wednesday starting at 20:00 for the second consecutive evening at the Palace Hall, as part of the George Enescu International Festival, with the programme including Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2 for orchestra, soprano, alto and mixed choir in C minor (Resurrection Symphony).

According to the event's website, the George Enescu Philharmonic Choir, conducted by Iosif Ion Prunner, soprano Elsa Benoit and mezzo-soprano Anna Lucia Richter will also perform.

* At the Romanian Athenaeum, at 17:00., the Les Siecles orchestra, conducted by Ustina Dubitsky, returns. Guest artist: violinist Isabelle Faust. The programme includes Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, and Hector Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14.

The Beethoven concerto will be performed with classical instruments, while Berlioz's symphony will be performed with French instruments from the early 19th century.

* A screening of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden) will be presented on Wednesday at 17:00, in the Auditorium Hall of the National Museum of Art of Romania.

The event is organised by the National Museum of Art of Romania, in partnership with Artexim.

* Starting at 22:00, pianist Francesco Tristano, an innovative composer who bridges the gap between Bach and techno, baroque and minimalist electronic music, will perform at Control Club.

The audience will hear Baroque masterpieces such as Girolamo Frescobaldi's Toccata No. 4 or excerpts from Bach's French and English suites, alongside works composed by Francesco Tristano himself - "Electric Mirror," "Neon City" or "Insomnia," ingenious transcriptions such as Derrick May's famous techno piece "Strings of Life," adapted for piano, and Ryuichi Sakamoto's delicate emotion in "Merry Christmas, Mister Lawrence," transformed by the pianist into a personal and intense experience.

* As part of the Lumieres d'Europe Academy, led by violinist David Grimal, at 17:00, the Auditorium Hall of the French Institute in Bucharest will host the conference "Creation and Freedom," given by philosopher Paul Audi.

Lumieres d'Europe is a music residency cultural project, organised under the high patronage of UNESCO, with the support of the French Embassy in Bucharest, the French Institute and Artexim.

The George Enescu International Festival runs until 21 September and marks 70 years since the death of the great Romanian composer and musician.
