European Commissioner Cretu announces she'll run as Pro Romania candidate in elections to European Parliament
Corina Crețu

European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu announced on Thursday that she will run as a candidate of the Pro Romania party in the elections to European Parliament, which are to be held on 26 May.

Attending on Thursday in Cluj a debate on cohesion policy in the European Union, Corina Cretu stated that this decision represents a delimitation from the current leadership of the Social Democratic Party (PSD).

"I am running in EP elections on behalf of the Pro Romania, that has an ambitious development plan for Romania, with competent and professional people. I was and I still am a convinced European Social-Democrat, and I believe that the only chance for Romania's development is inside a strong and equitable EU, where we need allies and friends, and I believe that this attack tactic on our part will cost us all. I want to say that the people know what I have done, (...) everything that I did was for Romania and Romanians, and I wish to do it further. (...) I still respect the PSD members, but I ask them to please understand that my decision is a clear delimitation of the current leadership of this party, which you very well know that, over the past years, minimised our work and efforts, of those who have tried to help Romania from abroad, ending with personal attacks and offenses against me and my colleagues from the European Commission," Corina Cretu stated.

The European Commissioner for Regional Policy participated on Thursday in Cluj-Napoca in the conference called "Social cohesion policy in the EU - past, present and future," an event organised by the "Gheorge Baritiu" History Institute of the Romanian Academy, the Cluj branch.
