The second league team CS Mioveni has managed a huge upset by eliminating Steaua Bucharest in the Romanian Cup, on Wednesday evening, in Mioveni, by winning the penalty shootout 5-4 after the scoreboard showed 1-1 at the end of extra time, in the round of 16.
Steaua has once again disappointed fans through its performance and result, this being its third defeat in a row in all competitions (after defeats in Europa League and Liga I).
The side from Bucharest dominated categorically the match from a possession point of view, but they didn't manage to create goal opportunities.
CS Mioveni, who had won last month a friendly against Steaua, managed to put one over Steaua in the debut of extra time, through Andrei Nila (95). Vlad Achim leveled things off (114) for Steaua and sent the match to the penalties.
Brazilians Fernando Boldrin and William De Amorim from Steaua shot over the bar, while Cosmin Nastasie of Mioveni had his shot blocked by Steaua's keeper Nita. The shots that went through came from Vlad Achim, Mihai Pintilii, Ovidiu Popescu and Wildfred Moke (for Steaua), and Roberto Ayza, Eduard Stoica, Andrei Nila, Costinel Gugu with the decisive shot belonging to Ionut Radescu.
CS Mioveni had great opportunities to score in the match through Nastasie (38) and Marius Staicu (55), while Steaua was dangerous near the goal through Pintilii (72), Boldring (86 - shot off the post), Momcilovic (105) and William De Amorim (105).
The match in Mioveni is the only one to keep going after regular time in this stage of the competitions. Also qualified to the quarter finals are ACS Poli Timisoara, CS Universitatea Craiova, CFR Cluj and FC Voluntari. Thursday will see the last three matches in the round of 16.
The quarterfinals will take place on March 29, the semifinals will play on April 26 (first leg) and May 17 (second leg), with the final to take place on May 27.
