Sports director of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) Vlad Munteanu said on Tuesday, after the draw for the groups of the 2025 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, which will take place in Romania, June 13-26, that it is possible for the team led by Ion Marin to advance to the semifinals.
"It is possible that we will advance to the semifinals. If we don't want to get higher at this level, it means that we don't deserve to be at such a final tournament. It's a tough group, even if Montenegro don't tell us anything now. It is a team qualified for the European Championship for the first time, but if we look at which qualifying group it comes from, we realise that it is a good opponent. I think that the supporters should also look at the younger generations because in 4-5 years these players will get to play on the National Arena for Romania's national team. It is a U19 generation that promises a lot and that will gain experience with the matches at this final tournament," he said.
"I have met generations in which the pressure of participating in a final tournament at home has had its say. An example is the U17 team. But there were also generations that were charged with the support of the people in the stands, families and friends. So, it depends a lot on them, because the psychological part is an important one for the players."
The Romanian national team got in Group A, along with Denmark, Spain and Montenegro, at the final tournament of the European Under-19 Football Championship, which will take place in Romania, between June 13-26. The draw, held at the House of Football, was carried out by the footballer Alex Pascanu, a player with FC Rapid Bucharest.
In Group B of the competition, which will be hosted by stadiums in Bucharest (Giulesti, and Arcul de Triumf), Voluntari (Anghel Iordanescu) and Ploiesti (Ilie Oana), the teams of Germany, Norway, England and the Netherlands will play.
The top two finishers in each group will qualify for the semifinals.
The Romanian team, coached by Ion Marin, qualified directly for the final tournament. Romania's last participation in an Under-19 final tournament was in 2022, when they lost all three matches.
