A delegation of the forestry trade unions is set to meet on Wednesday with representatives of the Government, the Ministry of the Environment and of the Ministry of Finance, to discuss their claims, the president of the SILVA Federation of Forestry Unions, Silviu Geana, told Agerpres.
Forestry unions protest on Wednesday, in front of the Government Palace, against the Government's decision to slash down the salaries of employees in the Romanian forest sector by 25%, while also cutting some other of their rights.
"A delegation consisting of ten protesters will participate in a meeting with representatives of the Prime Minister's Chancellery, with the adviser responsible for the relationship with the unions, with representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Water and Forests," said Silviu Geana.
According to him, during the meeting with the authorities there will be discussed the problem of the government cutting down salaries in the forestry sector by 25% in 2025, plus other rights established in the statute of the forest staff, such as the firewood for the forest staff, the reorganization of the National Forest Administration - Romsilva, the lack of social dialogue. At the same time, the unionists will request the unlocking from the state budget of the amounts necessary for the management of the forests belonging to the state.
"There are over 150 million RON the Government still owes our sector, for the administration of natural parks, thoroughbred horses and for the protection of private forests, for which the state provides an aid scheme. We also request the modification of the Forest Code to eliminate those quotas of shaped wood. There were two thresholds, one of 50 percent, introduced in 2025, and one of 70 percent, introduced in 2030 (editor's note). The Ministry of Environment and the Government will destroy Romsilva because these are costs that cannot be recovered. The wood needs to be sold on a free market, where demand meets offer, and not through stupid regulations made by politicians who didn't sell one cubic metre of wood in their lives," said the unionist.
