Save Romania Union (USR) MEP and a former health minister Vlad Voiculescu on Tuesday announced that the Bucharest Court ordered the Social Democratic Party (PSD) to pay him EUR 25,000 in damages for defamatory statements on the purchase of vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"For the horrible lies against me - those with the 'billion stolen from vaccines' - the PSD is ordered by the court to pay me EUR 25,000 as moral damages. Moreover, the court orders the defendant to withdraw the miserable posts from Facebook and to publish, at their own expense, the operative part of this judgment, after it becomes final, in two publications of nationwide circulation, on the website of the defendant PSD and on the social media Facebook and Telegram," Vlad Voiculescu said in a social media post.
He added that the Bucharest Court penalised PSD for its behaviour and statements such as "the man with the billion", "the EUR 1 billion scam," "locked Romanians in their homes so that they could steal," and "criminal."
In December 2023, Vlad Voiculescu and Ioana Mihaila, both former health ministers were indicted by the National Anti-Corruption Agency (DNA) for abuse of office in a case regarding the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines in which the damage would exceed EUR 1 billion.
