President Nicusor Dan conveyed, on Monday, on the occasion of International Roma Day, that one cannot talk about real professional and social integration without guaranteeing equal access of Roma citizens to education.

The message was presented by State Counselor Cristian Rosu, Head of the Office for Citizen Relations, Department of Administration, Public Policies and Civil Society, during the OPRE GALA event, organized by the National Agency for Roma and the National Center for Roma Culture - Romano Kher at the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

"Important steps have been taken by the authorities to find and apply adequate solutions to the difficulties faced by the Roma minority. However, there is still much to be done. We cannot talk about real professional and social integration without guaranteeing equal access of Roma citizens to education. A joint effort is needed, both by those who make public policies and by the minority, to accelerate change. The problems will not subside until we manage to significantly reduce social and economic inequalities," the head of state pointed out.

According to him, International Roma Day, the celebration of the Roma ethnicity in Romania, represents an opportunity to celebrate a community that has regained its freedom despite dramatic historical hardships and which, through its specific contribution, enriches the ethnic and cultural dialogue in our country.

"A nation reaches its potential when it manages to highlight the capabilities of all its citizens, without discrimination. We all benefit when each minority, without losing its traditions and identity, is encouraged to develop and be part of a society that is maturing and modernizing," the president emphasized.

In his opinion, this holiday reminds us of how important diversity is, as a force that helps progress and combat prejudice and extremism. By supporting and integrating the Roma, through programs and social initiatives, the younger generations receive a chance at a better life, Nicusor Dan added in the message.

"Currently, the Roma community can be proud of its roots, but also of its resilience, of its recognized personalities, in culture and art, on important world stages. On this day, dedicated to celebrating the Roma ethnicity, let us remember how beneficial authentic dialogue and collaboration are for the entire society. With empathy and wisdom, we can tear down the artificial walls between us to build, in their place, solid bridges. We truly have the chance to transform our diversity, rich in energies that will support Romania's growth", the head of state also conveyed.
