Groundbreaking ceremony kicks off Romania's national pavilion at Osaka World Expo 2025

The groundbreaking ceremony for Romania's national pavilion at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, Japan took place on Friday, with chargé d'affaires a.i. at the Romanian Embassy in Tokyo Geta Medeleanu attending as head of the Romanian delegation, Mrs. Atsuko Hirooka, special general director of the Japan Association for Expo 2025 Osaka, participating as head of the Japanese delegation, and Thomas Quemin representing the Japanese company responsible for the construction of the Romanian pavilion - GL events K.K.



"Built under the motto of sustainability, the Romanian pavilion represents a development concept based on recycling and reuse, in a systemic alignment with the sustainability goals applied and promoted by the organizers of this international event," the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a release on Friday.

Delivering remarks at the reception for the start of construction works on Romania's Expo 2025 Osaka pavilion were Osaka Prefecture Vice-Governor Nobuhiko Yamaguchi, Osaka deputy mayor Toru Takahashi, and Deputy Secretary General of the Japan Association for Expo 2025 Osaka, Manatsu Ichinoki. Also present at the event were representatives of the Kobe City government, the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, representatives of the Japan Association for Expo 2025 Osaka, and various members of Osaka's academic and business milieu.

The Foreign Ministry coordinates the process of Romania's preparation and participation in the Osaka World Exhibition themed as "Designing Future Society for Our Lives", and which will take place between April 13 and October 13, 2025. The venue of the exhibition will be on the artificial island of Yumeshima, located on the waterfront west of Osaka. More than 150 countries and 25 international organizations will participate in the event, which also expects to attract over 28 million visitors.

Romania opted for a type A national pavilion (small size, of approx. 900 sqm), that will sit in the "Saving Lives" expo sub-theme area. Ferdinand Nagy is General Commissioner of the Romanian Section of Expo 2025.

The architectural concept of the Romanian pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, named "The Romanian Magic Box - Creativity and Interactivity" was selected following a competition organized by the "Ion Mincu" University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest, in partnership with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, and which invited projects by architecture students.
