IGSU: Experts in civil protection discussed in Bucharest about interventions in emergency situations

Experts of the civil protection or emergency response structures from the states participating in the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism - 28 member states, as well as from Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Serbia and Turkey - on Wednesday and Thursday met in Bucharest, in the context in which Romania is holding the rotating presidency of the Council of EU.

According to the IGSU, the event took the form of an workshop, with its topic "Preparation for High Impact, Low Probability Events - Future Directions" and discussions focused on how to respond in complex emergency situations, considering the implementation of the new provisions of the Decision No. 1313/2013/EU of the European Parliament and the Council regarding an EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

At the workshop, discussions focused on the identification of such possibilities of creating a common approach at the EU level of the HILP type of disasters, identification of the necessary intervention capabilities and also the importance and manner of activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism in response to such emergencies.

A substantial contribution to discussions was also brought, according to the IGSU, by the UNISDR specialists (the United Nations Office for Reducing the Disaster Risk), NATO and the USA, as well as well as by those from the specialized directions of the European Commission (DG ECHO - the General Directorate for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, DG HOME - the General Directorate for Migration and Home Affairs, JRC - the Joint Research Centre).
