The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) hails the celebration, on December 14, of 66 years since the admission of Romania to the United Nations.

"In the 66 years of appurtenance to NATO, Romania affirmed itself as an active supporter and defender of the UN principles, as well as of cooperation on the international level and multilateral diplomacy. All throughout this period, our country reaffirmed and continuously diversified the UN member profile, having significant contributions to the general development of the organization, to strengthening the international legal system and international security, the promotion of democracy and human rights and policies for global growth," shows a MAE release sent.

Furthermore, after the accession to the European Union, Romania's activity at the UN included the promotion of topics and concerns of interest to the EU, the quoted source mentions.

Romania's contribution to the activities of the main bodies of the UN has included ensuring the presidency of the 22nd session of the General Assembly, as well as exercising the non-permanent member mandates on the Security Council of the UN, member in the Economic and Social Council, as well as a member of the Human Rights council.

On December 14, 1955, the General Assembly of the UN decided, through resolution A/RES/995 (x), the admission of Romania to the UN, together with 15 other states.

Romania was a non-permanent member of the Security Council in the years 1962, 1976-1977, 1990-1991 and 2004-2005, as well as in ECOSOC in the periods 1965-1967, 1974-1976, 1978-1980, 1982-1987, 1990-1998, 2001-2003, 2007-2009, 2018-2019. Starting with 2007, as a country that donates assistance for development, Romania is involved in a new form of cooperation with the UN, through the partnership developed with an important number of UN agencies and institutions, with activity in the field of development.

Furthermore, 2021 was the 30th anniversary since Romania participates uninterruptedly in UN peace missions, in accordance with the constant commitment and support for multilateralism and to ensure international peace and security, such as the missions in DR Congo (MONUSCO), South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

The formal presence of the UN in Romania dates back to 1980, when the UN Information Center was opened in Bucharest. Presently, the "UN House" in Bucharest hosts a series of representative offices in Romania of specialized agencies, programs and development funds in the UN system, Agerpres informs.
