On Tuesday, Save Romania Union (USR) MP Stelian Ion asked Interior Minister Lucian Bode for explanations regarding the case of journalist Emilia Sercan, who has claimed to be the object of a character assassination to which state bodies "made a major contribution."
Bode participated in a Government Question Time on Tuesday as part of a plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies, according to agerpres.ro.
"The report of the United States Department of State is very clear about the impunity of some police officers for some very serious acts they have committed. These are abominable abuses, beatings, inhuman and degrading treatment. Minister, does this matter matches your willingness to come before Parliament and to answer? It is also very important that you give us answers today regarding the case of journalist Emilia Sercan who was subjected to character assassination to which state bodies, including your ministry, unfortunately had a major contribution. You have not gone out in public so far to give some explanations, you have not gone out in public to accuse this character assassination, you have not gone out quick enough and ordered an investigation that will have a finality," said Ion.
He urged Bode to allow the Judicial Police to operate under the authority of the prosecutor's offices, so that there would be no more cases of "leakage of information" from criminal cases to the public.
"This double subordination of the police, on the one hand, to the person leading and supervising the investigation, that is to the prosecutors, then to the chief of police for administrative matters then to the interior minister has not brought anything good in the last decades. For more than 15 years, the prosecutors have been asking you to contribute, to accept such a transfer. Not a full one, not all at once. We had a proposal - first for the secondment of the judicial police and then for subordination to the prosecutor's offices. You did not agree," said Ion, a former justice minister.
Ion also reproached Bode of failing to issue application rules for the protection of victims with electronic bracelets.
