Iohannis-Merkel meeting in Brussels: Chancellor gives assurances of Germany's support for Romania's Presidency of EU Council

AGERPRES special correspondent Madalina Cerban reports: German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave assurances to President Klaus Iohannis on Thursday on the "full support" that Germany will offer to Romania during the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.

According to the Presidential Administration, Klaus Iohannis had a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday on the sidelines of the European Council meeting in Brussels.

"The meeting focused on topical themes on the European agenda, with an emphasis on the reflection regarding Europe's future, the future Multiannual Financial Framework, the Brexit issue and the management of migration at European level. The discussions highlighted the specificity of the current European context marked by the Brexit process and the prospect of the European elections, as well as the complexity of the files on the European agenda and the need to ensure their most efficient management," the Presidential Administration informs.

The Romanian president and the German Chancellor also discussed about the informal Summit on the Future of Europe in Sibiu, on May 9, 2019, "which will play an important role in shaping the future Union's Strategic Agenda intended to guide the EU action for the period 2020-2024, to strengthen unity between Member States and to ensure the citizens' support for the European project," the Presidential Administration shows.

At the same time, both leaders highlighted the need for a conveying on the occasion a clear vision on the future of the Union, based on the strengthening of the unity between the Member States.

With regard to the negotiations on the post-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework, was stressed the importance of obtaining an agreement in due time so as to convey a positive message to the European citizens about the Union's capacity to strengthen the European project, the Presidential Administration said.

"The President of Romania and the German Chancellor have expressed the common desire to conclude the UK withdrawal process from the EU in an orderly manner. The two senior officials have appreciated that the EU-UK withdrawal agreement approved at the political level by the European Union and the UK remains the most effective tool for limiting the negative consequences of Brexit for both parties and for ensuring legal certainty for citizens and the business milieu. It was also underlined that the ratification of the Withdrawal Agreement will allow for the building of a future ambitious partnership between the EU and the UK," says Presidential Administration.

President Iohannis also highlighted Romania's commitment and involvement as future Presidency of the EU Council in advancing the European agenda in the upcoming period as well as the need for close cooperation with all European partners in this regard.

"In her turn, Chancellor Angela Merkel gave assurances of the full support that Germany will provide to Romania during the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union, in the context of the good cooperation between Romania and Germany in the field of European affairs," the Presidential Administration emphasizes.
