Romanian tennis player Irina Begu on Wednesday qualified for the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 tournament in Palermo (Italy), endowed with total prize money of 232,244 euros, after defeating fifth seeded Dutch Arantxa Rus, 6-2, 7-5.
Begu (33, WTA's 142nd), the 2022 champion, won after almost two hours of play (1 h 54 min).
Irina Begu is now 2-0 in direct matches, as she had defeated Rus (33, WTA's 62nd) 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the Australian Open in 2013.
The Romanian secured a 5,750-euro check and 54 WTA points and in the quarterfinals will face the winner between Russian Erika Andreeva and American Ann Li.
Jaqueline Cristian, the seventh seed, is qualified for the round of 16 in Palermo and will meet Italian Lucia Bronzetti.
