Romanian player Iulian Chirita secured two medals in the doubles events on Wednesday at the World Youth Table Tennis Championships in Cluj-Napoca.
In the Under-19 mixed doubles event, Chirita and Wales's Anna Hursey defeated France's Flavien Coton and Leana Hochart 3-2 (11-13, 11-9, 11-13, 13-11, 11-8) in the quarter-finals, then beat Japan's Ryuusei Kawakami and Sachi Aoki 3-1 (11-6, 1-11, 11-5, 12-10) in the semi-finals, according to the Romanian Table Tennis Federation website. On Friday in the final, Chirita and Hursey will face China's Hechen Li and Yuxuan Qin, agerpres reports.
In the men's doubles event, Iulian Chirita and Portugal's Tiago Abiodun reached the semi-finals, where they will play Japan's Ryuusei Kawakami and Kazuki Yoshiyama, also on Friday.
Chirita and Abiodun beat the pairing of Alan Kurmangaliev (Kazakhstan) and Benyamin Faraji (Iran) 3-0 (11-5, 13-11, 12-10) in the round of 16, then defeated India's Ankur Bhattacharjee and Abhinandh Pradhivadhi 3-0 (11-2, 11-6, 12-10) in the quarter-finals.
In another round of 16 match, Dragos Bujor and Poland's Rafal Formela lost to Taiwan's Guan-Hong Kuo and Hsien-Chia Hsu 1-3 (9-11, 11-7, 11-13, 9-11).
In the Under-19 girls' event, Alesia Sferlea and Poland's Karolina Holda were beaten in the round of 16 by Belgium's Lilou Massart and Spain's Maria Berzosa 1-3 (9-11, 9-11, 12-10, 5-11), and Bianca Mei-Rosu and Slovenia's Sara Tokic lost 0-3 (8-11, 4-11, 3-11) to Japan's Sachi Aoki and Yuna Ojio.
In the Under-15 boys' doubles, Andrei Tibirna and Raul Creucu lost in the round of 16 to Italy's Francesco Trevisan and Danilo Faso 1-3 (11-9, 5-11, 9-11, 8-11).
In the girls' event, Patricia Stoica and the Czech Republic's Hanka Kodet were defeated in the quarter-finals by China's Qihui Zhu and Ziling Liu 3-0 (11-9, 11-4, 11-4) after a 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-7) win over Hong Kong's Sum Lok Yuen and Yee Lam Yeung.
Maya Madar and Austria's Mariia Lytvyn lost in the round of 16 to Algeria's Jade Morice and Tania Morice 0-3 (5-11, 11-13, 7-11).
