Jewish people in Romania, worried about anti-Semitism (survey)
A third of Jews in the community are alarmed by the risks of anti-Semitism, according to an opinion poll conducted by the Avangarde Behavioral Studies Group for the Elie Wiesel Institute.
The survey was conducted to measure the level of security felt by Jews and the perceptions regarding anti-Semitism, with the support of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania, before the terrorist attacks in southern Israel, the Administrative-Communication Service, Department of Public Relations and cultural-educational programs of the Elie Wiesel Institute stated on Monday.
According to the survey, 71% of the interviewees believe that there is anti-Semitism in Romania (48% - "to some extent", 14% - to a "great extent", 9% - "to a very great extent".
Also, 41% believe that anti-Semitism has increased in the last 5 years (12% - "increased a lot", 29% - "increased a little"). 38% of the participants in the survey consider that the anti-Semitism manifested in our country "remained the same", 11% that it "decreased a little", 5% that it "decreased a lot", and 5% - don't know/don't answer.
The survey reveals that between 38% and 68% of respondents believe that anti-Semitism is a problem in political life, on social networks, in the media, etc. Other problems evoked by the study participants are related to: the desecration of Jewish cemeteries (68%); vandalism of Jewish institutions and monuments (52%); manifestation of anti-Semitic attitudes on the street or in other public places (38%).
At the same time, the results of the survey reveal that 24% of the respondents affirm that they have been the victim of anti-Semitic remarks, while 75% declare that they have not been victims of such remarks.
The survey highlights that 14% affirm that they were the target of anti-Semitic actions, another 83% declaring that they did not suffer such attacks, and 3% don't know/don't answer.
A percentage of 51% of the respondents consider that the state protects the Jews in Romania (41% - "efficient", 10% - "very efficient", 31% - "not very efficient", 11% - "inefficient", 7% - Don't know/don't answer.
The survey was carried out between August 1st and October 1st, through the face-to-face interview method, on a sample of 440 subjects, representative of the adult population of Jewish ethnicity at the national level, having the maximum sample size, at a level of 95% confidence, +/- 4%.
