Former Finance Minister Darius Valcov, who fled a 6-year sentence for influence peddling and money laundering, is in the custody of the Romanian Police, after being taken over from Italian authorities on Monday and brought under escort to Romania, to be delivered to the Rahova Penitentiary.

"Darius Valcov is in police custody now, and will arrive in Romania. He is the first fugitive I bring back during my term as a Justice minister. I thank everyone involved, from police to the liaison magistrate, I thank the Italian authorities, and it's good to know what's next. Once he lands in Romania, he will be handed over to the Rahova Penitentiary, where he will spend 21 days of quarantine. We ensure him the four square meters of detention space, these were the guarantees the Justice Ministry provided the Italian courts, through the National Penitentiary Authority, for us to be able to bring him back, to serve his sentence here. After the stay in Rahova and when he gets to serve in a semi-open regime, we will move him to another penitentiary. Therefore, I think it's good to have everybody's trust in the justice system restored. We bring our famous or less famous fugitives back to the country," Justice Minister Alina Gorghiu wrote on Facebook.

The Romanian Police escort with the fugitive arrived on August 14 at the Henri Coanda Bucharest International Airport.
