Kateryna Zelenykh wins first medal for Romania at 2025 European Wrestling Championships

Ukrainian-born wrestler Kateryna Zelenykh will win the first medal for Romania at the 2025 European Wrestling Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia, after advancing on Wednesday to the women's freestyle 68 kg event final.

Zelenykh qualified directly into the quarterfinals, where she beat German Sophie Schaefle, in the semifinals she defeated Czech Adela Hanzlickova, and she will face Belarusian Alina Shevchuk in the final.

In women's freestyle 50 kg, compatriot Alina Grigore Vuc will fight for bronze with Belarusian Natalia Vorokina. Vuc defeated Maria Leorda of Moldova in the qualifications, in the quarterfinals she defeated Lithuanian Gabija Dilyte, losing the semifinal to Turkish Evin Demirhan.

In women's freestyle 55 kg, Beatrice Ionela Ferent defeated Azerbaijani Elnura Mamadova in the qualifications, but lost the quarterfinal to Ukrainian Oleksandra Khomenets.

Catalina Axente was defeated in the women's freestyle 76 kg quarterfinals by Austrian Martina Kuenz.

Team Romania also includes Andreea Beatrice Ana women's freestyle 53 kg; Roxana Capezan women's freestyle 62 kg, and Alexandra Anghel women's freestyle 72 kg.
