Labour minister Bucura-Oprescu: Every person deserves a chance to reach his/her potential, without barriers

The rights of people with disabilities must be observed, as everyone deserves a chance to reach his/her potential, without barriers, the minister of labour and social solidarity, Simona Bucura-Oprescu, writes in a message on the Facebook page of the institution she leads.

"Inclusion begins with respect and is built with solidarity. Every person deserves a chance to reach his/her potential, without barriers," said Simona Bucura-Oprescu, in the aforementioned post.

The minister's press release comes in the context of the International Day of Persons with Disabilitiesin which is celebrated on December 3, every year.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities has been marked since 1992, at the initiative of the United Nations (UN).

This day aims to support the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities.

"Today and every day, let us stand with people with disabilities, observe their rights and promote equal access for them, while offering them the support they need," the minister said in the same message.

At the same time, the Palace of Parliament will be illuminated in purple on Tuesday, to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

According to statistics published by the Ministry of Labour, the total number of people with disabilities was, at the end of June 2024, 942,889 people, in Romania, of whom 98.34% (927,275 people) were in the care of their families and/or lived independently (non-institutionalized) and 1.66% (15,614 people) were in public residential social assistance institutions.

On June 30, 2024, the rate of people with disabilities in the Romanian population was 4.32%.

Women represented 53.57% of the total number of people with disabilities. The number of people over 50 years of age represented 68.77% of the total number of adults with disabilities. The centralization of data by age group showed that 45.16% were people between 18-64 years old (425,822 people) and 46.27% were people over 65 years old (436,239 people).
