Lawyer Veronel Radulescu said on Friday that fugitives Elena Udrea and Alina Bica have challenged a court's decision to be detained in Costa Rica, arguing that the extradition procedure is complex.

He also referenced a statement by head of the Costa Rica's Interpol Office who said that having a child is not an impediment to extradition, adding that the "it is not Interpol chief who makes decision in Costa Rica's judiciary."

Costa Rica Interpol chief Gustavo Chinchilla announced on Thursday that Elena Udrea and Alina Bica are in custody for two months in the Vilma Curling detention centre pending an extradition trial.

Udrea was sentenced on June 5 by the Supreme Court of Justice to six years in prison for bribery and abuse of office in relation to a boxing bout, under a final and binding sentence.

Former head of the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terror (DIICOT) Alina Bica was sentenced on June 26 by the Supreme Court four years in prison in a case in which she was accused of aiding and abetting in a case implicating a former cabinet minister.
