Romania's NATO membership remains the foundation of national security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) underlined in a message marking the 77th anniversary of the signing of the Washington Treaty, the Alliance's founding act.
According to a press release sent to AGERPRES, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs marked NATO Day in Romania on Sunday and highlighted that Romania remains a firm supporter of the transatlantic relationship, an essential pillar of Euro-Atlantic security.
Romania promotes a stronger Europe within NATO, capable of making a real contribution to collective defence and to the resilience of the Euro-Atlantic area, the press release reads.
'In an international context marked by the worsening security situation in Europe, against the backdrop of the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine and the multiplication of global crises, Romania's NATO membership remains the foundation of national security. For Romania, being part of an Alliance based on collective defence guarantees, allied solidarity and military interoperability represents the strongest strategic anchor,' the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says.
NATO's unwavering commitment to defending every inch of Allied territory, enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, has been reaffirmed through the various initiatives and activities launched in recent years, which have strengthened NATO's deterrence and defence posture along the entire Eastern Flank, including in the Black Sea region and in Romania, through new defence plans and the deployment of forces and capabilities in our country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs points out.
'At a time when security, stability and membership of the Euro-Atlantic community directly influence Romania's future, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms the commitment of Romanian diplomacy to actively contribute to strengthening Romania's role within NATO, to reinforcing the transatlantic relationship and to promoting a safer and more united Europe. Many happy returns, Romania, in NATO!,' the quoted source adds.
According to Law No. 390/2004, NATO Day is marked in Romania on the first Sunday of April. Romania deposited its instrument of ratification of the Washington Treaty with the US Department of State on 29 March 2004, followed by the ceremony of raising the Romanian flag at NATO Headquarters during the ministerial meeting on 2 April 2004.
