The presidential elections and the constitutional referendum on October 20 are the most important democratic elections since the declaration of independence of the Republic of Moldova, the Moldovan ambassador in Bucharest, Victor Chirila, told AGERPRES on Tuesday.

According to the Moldovan diplomat, the vote on October 20 "will seal the destiny of the Republic of Moldova for the next decades".

"The European states have opened the door wide for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU. Now it is our turn to clearly tell our European partners if we want and are ready to cross the threshold of the Union. This is why the vote cast on October 20 will seal our destiny for the next decades, will mark the future of our relations with Romania and the European Union, will decide our independence, security and freedom. Today, the Republic of Moldova has a unique, historic and the last opportunity to be part of the most prosperous and advanced European community, where states are respected not because they are big, but because they are free, democratic, prosperous, tolerant, peaceful and in solidarity. Missing this unique opportunity will be a big failure not for President Maia Sandu, but for the Republic of Moldova, for its dream of truly become a free, independent and prosperous state", stated Victor Chirila.

The authorities in the Republic of Moldova will open 16 polling stations on the territory of Romania for the presidential elections and the referendum to amend the Constitution, which will take place on October 20.

According to a press release from the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Bucharest, three of the 16 polling stations will operate in the city of Bucharest and two each in Cluj and Iasi. The polling stations will be open at 7:00 a.m. and will remain open until 9:00 p.m. The vote may be cast on the basis of a valid identity card, valid or expired passport.

The referendum for amending the Constitution aims to include in the fundamental law, based on the vote of the population, the irreversible European course of the Republic of Moldova. The question addressed to the voters will be "Do you support amending the Constitution with a view to the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union?", and the answers will be "Yes" or "No".
