National Honey Fair opening on beekeeping platform in Baneasa on Friday
From Friday to Sunday, the citizens of Bucharest are expected at the National Honey Fair, a new event dedicated to consumers of beekeeping products, organised by the Romanian Beekeepers Association (ACA) on the beekeeping platform in Baneasa, told Agerpres.
"The National Honey Fair - autumn edition - which will take place this year from September 1 to 3, 2023, is the most important event of its kind in the Capital and is already a traditional event that enjoys a very good participation both from bee lovers and beekeepers, whether participants or exhibitors, bee processors and representatives of beekeeping associations. By organising this fair we want to increase the interest in bees, beekeeping and bee products, given the importance of this sector for agriculture, environment, health and a balanced diet," say the representatives of ACA.
Romanian beekeepers have recently asked the authorities to grant a de minimis aid of 15-20 euros per bee family to compensate losses, given that extreme weather events have affected more than half of honey production, and the lack of financial resources, reduced consumption and massive imports of honey have caused serious problems in the sector.
According to statistics, domestic honey consumption is estimated at 550 grams per capita, with Romania at the bottom of the European ranking with a consumption 3-4 times lower than the two kilograms consumed in Germany or 1.5 kilograms in the Netherlands and Belgium. Romanians consume 70 grams of sugar and only 3 grams of honey every day.
In previous years, Romania's honey production averaged 22,000 tonnes of honey annually, ranking fourth in Europe.
At present, there are 2.35 million beekeeping families nationwide and there are more than 35,000 to 37,000 registered beekeepers, around 50% of whom are members of the ACA, which owns more than 60% of the bee families.
