Almost 90 percent of Romanian women have never been screened for breast cancer, according to the findings of a study in oncological conditions in Romanian women.
The Coalition for Women's Health, initiated by the Renasterea Foundation, says 66 percent of Romanian women have never performed breast self-examination for nodules, although doctors recommend they do it monthly.
The study also shows that a low level of healthcare education, ignoring the first symptoms of the illness as well as difficult access to free medical testing are the main aspects identified by doctors and women alike as reasons for these worrying statistics. Likewise, doctors argue that insufficient funds and the absence of a solid promotion of the importance of prevention conjure to delay the women discovering the illness until it has reached advanced stages.
Romania and two other European Union member states do not currently have any national breast cancer screening programme.
Given the circumstances, the survival rate in the case of breast cancer in Romania is 63.9 percent, as against an almost 75-percent European average.
