President Nicusor Dan declared that, in whatever form the Chamber of Deputies sends him the draft law to combat extremism, he will promulgate it, because that is what the Romanian Constitution says, emphasizing that he brought "pertinent arguments" on this draft in the request for re-examination submitted to Parliament.
The head of state was asked about the fact that the ruling coalition parliamentarians rejected his request for a re-examination of the bill to combat extremism in the Senate and whether he will promulgate the bill in its current form or continue to try to amend it in one way or another.
"I think we have discussed this law enough in the public space. I would like the public space to see this as a debate based on arguments, not as a match between X and Y. I still believe that my arguments are pertinent, the decision-making chamber is the Chamber of Deputies. In whatever form the Chamber of Deputies sends me the draft, I hope in a modified form, in whatever form it sends me, I will promulgate it, because that is what the Constitution says," declared Nicusor Dan, on Tuesday, in a press conference at the Romanian Embassy in Paris, after the meeting held at the Elysee Palace with the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron.
President Nicusor Dan is on a two-day working visit to France, which began on Monday.
The Senate plenary adopted, on Monday, the draft law on some measures to prevent and combat antisemitism, xenophobia, radicalization and hate speech in its original form, rejecting the objections formulated by President Nicusor Dan in the request for re-examination of the normative act, submitted to Parliament.
