No direct link between seed treatment and bee extinction (ASAS head Tabara)

The authorizations granted by the Ministry of Agriculture for the treatment of autumn grassy cereal seeds with products based on neonicotinoids are perfectly valid because the institution is responsible for Romania's agricultural production, and research has shown that there is no direct link between these treatments and the disappearance of bees. said for AGERPRES the president of the Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences (ASAS), Valeriu Tabara.

Three agricultural and environmental organizations - WWF Romania - the World Wide Fund for Nature, the Eco Ruralis Association and the Romanian Beekeeping Associations Federation ROMAPIS - three days ago requested the Ministry of Agriculture to withdraw the temporary authorizations granted at the request of the Alliance for Agriculture and Cooperation, for the use of three products based on neonicotinoids, because they endanger the safety of pollinators and citizens.

In response, Valeriu Tabara, who used to be minister of Agriculture, opined that the requests were made "only out of a desire for affirmation, without scientific arguments", adding that ASAS performed analyzes at the most advanced laboratories in Europe, in France, Germany and Bulgaria respectively, after all the rules of the European Union, and no residues were found that would constitute a danger either for bees or for humans.

He added that in France, but also in other EU countries, there have been no treatments with neonicotinoids for years, and the phenomenon of the disappearance of bees has continued.

Tabara specified that the EU's decision to ban neonicotinoid pesticides came after a judgment of the European Court that judged a lawsuit complained by a Belgian about what was happening in Belgium and then it was a recommendation at the level of the member states not to use any exceptions anymore.

The Ministry of Agriculture granted, at the beginning of this month, authorizations for the emergency use of three products based on neonicotinoids for the treatment of autumn grassy cereal seeds (maize, sunflower and rapeseed) to combat soil pests.
