Ukraine's Ambassador to Romania Ihor Prokopchuk paid tribute on Thursday to football coach Mircea Lucescu.

'Mr Lucescu left a remarkable mark on the history of Ukrainian and world football. After the start of Russia's full-scale military invasion, he remained alongside Ukrainian football and the Ukrainian people. We stand with the family of the deceased and with all Romanian friends in their grief. Luminous memory to the great coach and man,' the Embassy of Ukraine in Romania wrote in a post on its Facebook page.

Mircea Lucescu died on Tuesday at the age of 80.

On 16 May 2004, he officially took over the Ukrainian team FC Shakhtar Donetsk, which he went on to transform into a leading side in European football.

Under his leadership, Shakhtar won eight national league titles (2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014), six Ukrainian Cups (2004, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016) and seven Super Cups (2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), as well as the UEFA Cup in 2009, following a 2-1 final against Werder Bremen.

In 2013, Mircea Lucescu became the longest-serving coach in the history of the Ukrainian club, and in 2014 he was named Ukraine's best coach for the eighth time.

On Thursday, all those who wish may pay their final respects to the great Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu.
