Oana Gheorghiu, nominated by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan for the position of Deputy Prime Minister, stated that if appointed, she would "loyally support and represent" the Government's position in relations with the United States.
Her reaction came after the interim PSD president, Sorin Grindeanu, called on Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan to withdraw the nomination to avoid "compromising" Romania's relationship with the United States.
"Nothing I wrote on my personal Facebook page prior to being nominated for the position of Deputy Prime Minister in any way commits the Romanian state or the Government of Romania. All my comments and posts represented the personal opinions of a Romanian citizen, a member of civil society, who expressed herself on her own social media account, in certain situations, exercising her right to free speech. The post that has now sparked critical reactions was written in a highly emotional context the February meeting in the Oval Office with President Zelensky which directly influenced the way it was phrased. I was not the only one moved by that event. Of course, looking back, I would not write it in the same terms, even if I had not been nominated for a public position," Oana Gheorghiu wrote on Facebook.
She added that if appointed Deputy Prime Minister, she would "loyally support and represent" the Romanian Government's position in relation to the United States and the Trump Administration.
"Beyond the emotions of the moment, I maintain my deep respect for the United States of America, my gratitude for its constant contribution to Euro-Atlantic security and, implicitly, to Romania's as well as my trust in the strategic partnership between Romania and the US. If I am appointed Deputy Prime Minister, I will loyally support and represent the Romanian Government's position in relation to the United States and the Trump Administration," Oana Gheorghiu stated.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan on Tuesday sent to the Presidential Administration the proposal for Oana Gheorghiu to take over the vacant post of Deputy Prime Minister, following Dragos Anastasiu's resignation in August.
Co-founder and co-president (since February 2025, previously vice-president) of the "Daruieste Viata" Association, Oana Gheorghiu has been involved for over a decade in developing medical infrastructure projects and advocacy campaigns that have changed the way society views the state's responsibility in healthcare, according to a Government press release.
