Romania's Police have participated alongside Europol, law enforcement authorities of other 51 countries and four international bodies in the Operation Ciconia Alba aimed to dismantle organised crime groups that were operating inside and outside the EU, ending up with 314 persons arrested, says a press release sent to agerpres on Wednesday by the Romanian Police General Inspectorate (IGPR).
The operation aimed at fighting illegal migration, human trafficking, drug dealing and fraud by electronic means of payment.
"As many as 314 persons were arrested during the operations, 529 human trafficking victims were identified, and 2.38 tonnes of cocaine were seized, as over 540,000 persons and motor vehicles were checked," says the source.
The information collected during these global actions was used to start 449 new investigations.
As part of the operation, the Romanian Police unfolded two actions to dismantle groupings specialising in human trafficking.
"As many as 15 searches were conducted, with seven members of the targeted criminal groups getting arrested. Likewise, on 12 October, five Romanian police staff participated in the UK in domiciliary visits," the IGPR release adds.
The deployed Police officers were constantly supported by colleagues at the operational centre at the Europol seat in The Hague. There, the Europol officers, the liaison officers and the national experts from the participating countries carried out a quick swap of information using the Europol network.
As many as 24 non-EU countries participated in the operation, alongside all of the EU member states.
The Operation Ciconia Alba is a third in a series of joint action days that are making the object of the EU policy for 2013 - 2017.
