The opposition Save Romanian Union - PLUS Alliance (USR-PLUS) believes that President Klaus Iohannis should participate in a government meeting that is supposed to deal with controversial ordinances on the criminal codes in order to block their adoption, USR national leader Dan Barna said on Thursday.

He announced having sent a letter to Prime Minister Viorica Dancila asking her to give up on the adoption of the ordinances and he also submitted a similar document to the European partners.

"There is again the aggression with the ordinances. This threat, which has kept Romanians in the streets ever since Ordinance 13 almost continuously, is almost here again, as we see that [justice minister] Tudorel Toader and Mrs Dancila are talking again about the ordinances on the criminal codes and our position is very clear: the ordinances do not need to be issued. I have sent Mrs Dancila a letter in which we are asking for that backed by arguments. We are also sending a similar document to the European partners informing them and asking them for a firm position against the position of the government to issue ordinances on the codes," Barna said at a news conference.

USR-PLUS argues the ordinances are "sabotaging" justice.

"There is an optimistic thread, nonetheless, that these ordinances will be dropped. If they remain on the agenda of tomorrow's meeting, we think it would be a good idea for President Klaus Iohannis to take part again in the government meeting and chair it to block these ordinances, because these ordinances only continue to sabotage justice," added Barna.

He said that in drawing up these ordinances, Toader ignored the positions of the professional associations and the Venice Commission.
