Organized crime works in an integrated, organized and increasingly sophisticated manner, and the response of law enforcement institutions must be in the same manner: integrated, organized, based on extensive and in-depth cooperation, the acting Minister of Internal Affairs, Catalin Predoiu, told a Monday's bilateral Romanian-American conference, taking place in Constanta from June 8 to 10.
During the talks, Predoiu emphasized that the security dimension of the Romanian-American Strategic Partnership must be doubled by concrete forms of operational cooperation.
The minister drew attention to the increasingly global nature of the phenomenon: "Organized crime has become a global actor, with multiple integrated networks, which act in various forms and represent one of the greatest threats to democratic societies."
Regarding the bilateral framework, Predoiu stressed that the Strategic Partnership with the United States must be strengthened through concrete actions.
"Our strategic partnership with the United States is extremely important for Romania not only in terms of security and military, but also in terms of integrating our efforts in the field of law enforcement and combating crime," emphasized Predoiu.
Minister Catalin Predoiu, Prosecutor General Cristina Chiriac and DIICOT Chief Prosecutor Codrin-Horatiu Miron opened on Monday in Constanta the bilateral conference "Strengthening U.S.-Romanian Transnational Cooperation on Combating Organized Crime", organized by the U.S. Department of Justice, in the presence of specialized officers of the Romanian Police and representatives of the FBI, DEA and Secret Service accredited in Romania.
On behalf of the organizer, the U.S. Department of Justice, the event was opened by John Hanley, Resident Legal Advisor of the Office of Professional Development, Assistance and Training of Prosecutors Abroad, within the Department of Justice.
On the Romanian side, the opening ceremony was also attended by Quaestor Vasile Costea, Deputy Inspector General of the Romanian Police, and Chief Commissioner Daniel Filip, Deputy Director of the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime.
The event is part of the commitments made during Minister Predoiu's official visit to Washington in February, following which Romania and the United States agreed to intensify bilateral cooperation in the field of law enforcement.
