Romanian rower Mihai Chiruta won Final B of the men's single rowing event, on Saturday, at the Olympic Games in Paris, after a formidable finish, Agerpres reports.

Chiruta, who at 1,500 meters was 7-8 meters behind the Dane Sverri Nielsen, launched the attack in the last hundred meters and managed to cross the finish line in front of his opponent, as showed by the photo. Both rowers were recorded with the same time, 6 min 44 sec 83/100, but the victory belonged to the Romanian.

Chiruta, who had a better time by about 8 seconds compared to the one he managed to obtain in the semifinal, thus ranked 7th in the final ranking of the event.

Chiruta (25 years old) participated in his first edition of the Olympic Games.

Romania does not have any Olympic medals in this men's event, but in the women's category Sanda Urichianu Toma (1980), Valeria Racila (1984) and Elisabeta Lipa (1992) won the gold.
