Romania won gold in the women's eight plus (8+) event at the Olympic Games in Paris, on Saturday, after dominating the final of the most important rowing event, Agerpres reports.
The Romanian team, composed of Maria Magdalena Rusu, Roxana Anghel, Ancuta Bodnar, Maria Lehaci, Adriana Adam, Amalia Beres, Ioana Vrinceanu, Simona Radis, Victoria Stefania Petreanu, clocked in at 5 min 54 sec 39/100, finishing by more than one boat ahead of Canada (Jessica Sevick, Caileigh Filmer, Maya Meschkuleit, Kasia Gruchala-Wesierski, Avalon Wasteneys, Sydney Payne, Kristina Walker, Abby Dent, Kristen Kit), the reigning Olympic champion, which clocked in at 5 min 58 sec 84/100.
The bronze medal went to Great Britain (Heidi Long, Rowan McKellar, Holly Dunford, Emily Ford, Lauren Irwin, Eve Stewart, Harriet Taylor, Annie Campbell-Orde, Henry Fieldman), which clocked in at 5 min 59 sec 51/100.
Three years ago, in Tokyo, Romania ranked 4th in this event's final, after setting a new world and Olympic record in the series (5:52.99).
Romania's last Olympic medal in this event - bronze - was won in 2016, in Rio.
This is Romania's fourth Olympic title in women's eight, after those won in 1996, 2000, 2004.
Romanian rowers now has five medals won in the 2024 Olympics, two gold and three silver.
