The 14th-century Peasant Fortress in Saschiz, also known as the Shelter Fortress, which reopened to visitors this spring during the Rhubarb Festival following full restoration with EU funds, will also serve as becomes a cinema venue starting this autumn, under the initiative "Movie Night at the Fortress."
The idea belongs to young volunteers recruited this summer by the Saschiz Town Hall to guide tourists visiting the commune's UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic center and the Peasant Fortress.
The first movie night is scheduled for September 27, at 20:00, when the film "Night at the Museum" will be projected on the fortress walls.
"The fortress volunteers have prepared not only a movie but also a few surprises you won't want to miss. And if you're afraid of the dark, don't worry there will be plenty of us to chase away any evil spirits (...). Together with our volunteers, we've worked to create two days full of adventure and fun that will take us back in time. On September 27, we'll host a movie night featuring Night at the Museum. Then, on September 28, the volunteers will organize a treasure hunt that will bring us back to the fortress's glory days," reads a post on the Facebook page of the Refuge Fortress in Saschiz.
Saschiz Town Hall launched in May a campaign to recruit young volunteers to guide the many tourists visiting the commune's historic center part of the UNESCO World Heritage List along with the 14th-century Peasant Fortress and other attractions, particularly during the summer season.
"We haven't hired anyone else for the tourist sites and rely only on town hall staff. So, we challenged young people to join us during the summer holidays to accompany visitors at the Refuge Fortress and throughout the UNESCO site (...). We couldn't afford to hire more people, nor to assign two extra staff members from the town hall. That's why we invited children and young people who wanted to get involved to be the ones opening the gates of the Saschiz Fortress. They help us with opening the site, selling tickets, and being excellent hosts for tourists," said Saschiz Mayor Ovidiu Soaita, in a statement to AGERPRES.
The Peasant Fortress in Saschiz was restored with European funds through a project financed under the 2014-2020 Regional Operational Programme, Axis 5, Investment Priority 5.1 - Conservation, protection, promotion, and development of natural and cultural heritage. The total value of the restoration project exceeded 8.4 million lei, of which over 8.2 million lei was non-reimbursable funding.
