Pensioners by 49,000 less in 2016, retirees per employees ratio at 9 to 10

The average number of pensioners was 5.257 million in 2016, by 49,000 less than in the previous year, while the average monthly pension was 948 lei, by 6.3 percent higher from the year before, shows data released on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

The ratio of the average number of retirees from the public social security system to the number of employees was 9 to 10, varying significantly nationwide between 5 to 10 for Bucharest and 17 to 10 in Teleorman County.

The average social security pension was 931 lei, and the ratio of the average old age and full length of service public social security pension (tax and social health insurance contribution excluded) to the net average wage was 53.3 percent (as to 57.8 percent in the previous year).

There was a significant nationwide variation of the average social security pension, with the lowest value standing at 711 lei in Giurgiu County and the upper value at 1,122 lei in Bucharest.

Retirees of the social security system accounted for an overwhelming 99.9 percent of the total number of pensioners. Pensioners under the public social security system represented 89 percent of the total, and old age pensioners accounted for 75.1 percent of the total number of the pensioners under the social security system. Pensioners in the early and part-time early retirement categories accounted for 1.9 percent.

The total number of beneficiaries of the guaranteed minimum social pension was of 566,600 in 2016, of whom 459,400 in the public social security system and 107,200 people from the former farmers' pension system.
