The Social Democratic Party (PSD) will call for an extraordinary session of Parliament to debate and adopt a legislative initiative aimed at new measures to manage the bear population, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced on Wednesday.
He was asked by journalists about the tragic case of the young girl who died on the Jepii Mici tourist trail in the Bucegi Mountains after being attacked by a bear, after which the animal was shot, as it was aggressive and did not leave the area where the victim's body was.
"Not necessarily shot, to make a selection where there is a danger zone, where they are signalled by mayors, by foresters, by locals. I also spoke with the minister of the Environment, I also spoke with the most involved and knowledgeable in the field. There's overcrowding in certain areas, they don't have enough food and that's why they're coming down. I also spoke with Mr. Simonis, the Chamber Speaker, because such a measure can only be done through Parliament. And, after discussions with the minister of the Environment, we are starting an initiative and we will ask for an extraordinary session to pass it through Parliament," said Ciolacu.
According to Ciolacu, the envisaged legislative changes are being prepared.
"We are working on that at the moment. It is obvious that human life comes first, but, I repeat, it will not be given free rein to shoot bears on Romanian territory, each as we wish and when we wish. Very high-risk areas will be tackled," Marcel Ciolacu explained.
