President Nicusor Dan announced on Thursday that he promulgated the law which penalizes the bribery of foreign public officials in international business transactions.

"This is a law that aligns us with the OECD [Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development] standards and brings us closer to a strategic objective: Romania's accession to the OECD," Nicusor Dan wrote on his Facebook page.

The head of state mentioned that this law provides for higher fines for individuals if the court imposes this penalty, separate from the prison sentence, with the value of a day-fine ranging between 500 and 10,000 lei.

"Goods or money obtained indirectly from corruption acts can be confiscated. Bribery of a foreign public official is penalized even when they misuse their position. Cases of this type will be mandatorily investigated by the DNA [National Anticorruption Directorate] prosecutors," the president mentioned.

"Romania's accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2026 will bring more foreign investments, lower financing costs and greater confidence in the Romanian economy," President Nicusor Dan added.

On October 8, the Chamber of Deputies adopted, as the decision-making body, the bill to amend and supplement the Law No. 319/2024 regarding measures for the implementation of the Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions, adopted in Paris on November 21, 1997, as well as to supplement the Law No. 302/2004 on international judicial cooperation in criminal matters.
