President Nicusor Dan said on Wednesday that the state must not tolerate threats made by a former partner against his ex-partner, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable and must be prosecuted according to the law.
"This is a very serious matter. First, speaking generally: this kind of behavior is completely unacceptable. Why - why is it that now - again, we're speaking in general terms and I'll mention again to Mr. Pieleanu's case - why is it that in cases already documented, victims only come forward after 10 or 15 years? This is the failure of the Romanian state, because they didn't have enough trust at the time of the incident to turn to state authorities for help. And this is what we need to build. Just like we discussed a week or two ago about victims of domestic violence. It's unacceptable. The Romanian state must not tolerate - not even the act of a former partner threatening his ex-partner. That is completely unacceptable. These individuals must be prosecuted, as the law requires," Nicusor Dan told a press conference, when asked about the Snoop investigation, which revealed that several former students have accused the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA) professor Marius Pieleanu of sexual abuse.
He stated that "when society sees that in 10 or 20 cases there have been real consequences, then people naturally become more mindful of respecting the law."
Regarding the case of Marius Pieleanu, the head of state said that "a thorough investigation must be carried out by the university," while also ensuring "the right to a defense for the accused," as this is a cornerstone of the rule of law.
"What I believe should happen is the an investigative commission must be set up, and at the end of the investigation, we should be presented with the findings," the president added.
