The Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state, and Romania will respect the will of its citizens, President Nicusor Dan said on Friday, after attending the informal European Council meeting in Brussels.
He was responding to a question regarding the possibility of a future union between Romania and its neighbouring country, agerpres reports.
'At this moment, the Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state, and sovereignty is expressed through the majority will of its citizens. For most Moldovan citizens the country's objective is integration into the European Union. Romania - whether you call it a big brother or refer to our shared cultural and historical identity - supports the goal that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova have chosen for themselves. I am optimistic that this objective will be achieved. If, in the medium or long run, the majority of citizens adopt a different position, we will act accordingly. For now, we respect the sovereignty expressed by the will of Moldovan citizens,' the president said.
