The increasingly uncertain international context is influencing the intention of Romanians to go to work abroad and only 6.3% of them already have a plan in place for 2026, with the first countries on the list of options being Germany, the Netherlands, Bulgaria and Greece, while the United Arab Emirates and Cyprus are decreasing in preferences.

"Increasingly fewer Romanians are interested in a job abroad, especially now, when the international context is increasingly uncertain. Almost 28,000 applications for jobs abroad have been registered since the beginning of the year, which is 1% of the total applications", show the data of the latest survey conducted by eJobs.

For the rest of the year, no major changes are foreseen from this point of view, given that only 6.3% of the applicants asked if they are considering the idea of going to work abroad answered affirmatively and that they already have a plan in place in that regard. 21.2% were not as firm, but they said that they are considering this option only if they do not find a satisfactory job in Romania. 60.1% said that they have no plan to leave the country, and 12.5% would also be willing to work for an employer abroad if remote collaboration that does not involve relocation is accepted.

The countries that attracted the most applications since the beginning of the year are Germany, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, Sweden and France.

"However, if we make a dissociation between the data and look strictly at what has happened in the market since March 1, since the war in the Middle East broke out, we see a significant drop in the ranking of Romanians' favourite destinations for Cyprus, which drops from the 6th position to the 12th position and a minor one for the United Arab Emirates, from the 7th position to the 9th position. On the other hand, destinations such as Spain, Italy and Greece, considered safer from a geopolitical point of view or, simply places where candidates can integrate more easily due to the large communities of Romanians already existing there, are rising in Romanians' preferences," says Ana Calugaru, head of communications at eJobs.

Transport/logistics, tourism and retail are the areas towards which Romanians who plan to go work abroad are looking for. Insurance is an area that has recently entered the rankings and, for this first part of the year, it even manages to dethrone larger employers, such as services, construction, food industry or agriculture.

"Abroad continues to remain an option considered first of all by candidates in the 25-35 age group and then by the very young (18-24 years old). The need for stability and the aversion to such a big change is felt increasingly strongly as they get older, so that candidates who are over 45 years old are also the ones who apply the least," according to Calugaru.

By career level, the first applicants for jobs abroad are those who have between 2 and 5 years of experience, then entry level candidates (0 - 2 years of experience) and only at the end the seniors, with more than 5 years of experience and those who have no experience at all. By educational attainment, on the first two places there are candidates from two opposite categories, namely skilled workers and high school graduates.

Despite the fact that candidates' interest in jobs in other countries is decreasing, foreign employers remain open to recruiting Romanians. Since January, almost 2,000 jobs have been posted, most of them for Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, Austria, the USA, Bulgaria, Ireland and Greece. Candidates are looking to work in construction, healthcare, automotive, manufacturing, food, services and tourism, and the levels of experience required are similar to those of the candidates who apply the most - mid level (2 - 5 years) and entry level (0 - 2 - 2 years).

The survey was conducted in January on a sample of 950 candidates and employees on the labour market. At the moment, there are 22,000 job openings available on eJobs.ro and 8,000 on iajob.ro. About 1,000 jobs are abroad.
