The Romanian state and the society overall must find solutions to overcome the marginalisation of Roma people and to better integrate them, President Klaus Iohannis said on Friday in a message sent on the International Roma Day.
"The International Roma Day also represents an opportunity for an objective look at the reality of the daily existence of this ethnic community. The qualities, customs and crafts which won them a special cultural identity cannot hide the fact that Roma people are still discriminated against and make up increasingly poorer and more disadvantaged communities. The Romanian state and the society overall must find solutions to overcome the marginalisation of Romany people and to better integrate them. At the same time, education holds an utmost importance in the personal, material and spiritual fulfillment of those making up such communities. To meet these goals, by the efforts of the authorities and with the commitment and solidarity of the society, I want the International Roma Day to be a moment of inspiration and commitment," Iohannis says in his message.
In his opinion, the International Roma Day is a festive moment, an occasion for joy both for the Roma and for those who, knowing their history and traditions, cherrish their contribution to the world cultural diversity. "On this day it is becoming to praise the personalities the Romany community has begotten, pay homage to the Roma who died in the two world wars of the 20th century or were Holocaust victims. On this occasion, it is becoming to bring back to the attention the danger that ignorance, intolerance, xenophobia and racism continue to represent," said Iohannis.
