President Klaus Iohannis stated on Tuesday that the Romanians currently expect the political class to provide "a contemporary content to the democratic citizenship" dimensions.

"This year marks the 30th anniversary of Romania returning on the democratic development route and, precisely 29 year ago, the Proclamation in Timioara gave the expression to the ideals on whose behalf, with sacrifices, the Romanian Revolution was carried out: liberty, pluralism, democracy. The observance of the human rights and the rule of law, the fight against intolerance, the protection of persons belonging to minorities and the cultivation of cultural diversity, constitutive values and objective of the Francophonie, are, in view of our recent past, closer, more relevant. The French language has the privilege to have given international resonance and an historical echo to the worlds 'liberte, egalite, solidarite' - 'liberty, equality, solidarity.' Today, our citizens expect the political class to provide a contemporary content to these democratic citizenship dimensions, suitable to the challenges we are confronted with," the head of state said within the event dedicated to the International Francophonie Day organised at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.

He underscored that "for Romania, being part of the large Francophone family means more than a common cultural patrimony, it means our nation's membership to fundamental values and options."

"The modernisation and Europeanisation of our country have been built on the principles and ideals promoted in the world through the French language, ending in politics, education and culture. Francophonie, however, is not just about the past. Today, the great international challenges make the objectives and missions of the International Organization of La Francophonie more current than ever," Iohannis stated.

The event was attended by Olympiads and winners at the national and international competitions of French language. President Klaus Iohannis congratulated them for their results.

"The Francophone movement tells the world, for nearly 50 years, that what mankind has more valuable is the diversity in which man expresses his freedom and creativity. In the capitalisation of freedom, human society does not know a better tool than education. Education is a primary contributor to building an inclusive world, peace and peaceful dialogue among civilizations. Education is, at the same time, the way that enables young people to discover their values and set their goals in view of training professionally, civically or politically. Such an approach won't run late in showing results," the head of state mentioned.

Iohannis mentioned that Romania is carrying out a series of projects that can become models to follow for the other states in the organisation, indicating the Eugen Ionesco academic scholarship programme, the Educated Romania project.

Secretary General of Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) Louise Mushikiwabo stated that the OIF is counting on the Romanian Presidency at the EU Council to support the balance of the working languages in Brussels.

She added that the French language is the language of the future, a modern language, of creation, research and innovation. The OIF Secretary- General mentioned that the OIF pleaded for the multilingualism of the European institutions, adding that the institution counts on Romania's Presidency at the EU Council to continue this call for the necessity that working languages in Brussels be balanced. Louise Mushikiwabo said she knows that Romania is already supporting this project and she thanked our country for contributing to this effort to preserve multilingualism in the international space.

The head of stated awarded the Diploma of his High Patronage to the Francophone University Agency for the Digital Development Initiative in the Francofon University Space (IDNEUF 4), which will be held from 18-21 June in Bucharest. The diploma was awarded to President of the Francophone University Agency, namely Professor Sorin Campeanu.
