Romania's President Klaus Iohannis will be received on Friday, on the side-lines of the Rome European summit, in an audience with Pope Francis at the Holly See alongside other participating heads of state or government, according to the Presidential Administration.

On Saturday, Iohannis is scheduled to attend an informal meeting of the Council of the European Union that celebrates 60 years since the signing of the Rome treaties.

The anniversary Rome summit will celebrate a defining moment in the development of the European design, namely the signing on March 25, 1957 by the six founding members of the European Community - Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands - of the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community and the Treaty establishing the European Atomic Energy Community.

"The European summit will be a moment for celebrations and one for taking stock on sixty years in the life of the European design. At the same time, the Rome Summit will mark the beginning of a reflection process on the future of the European Union, which is expected to conclude in 2019," says the Presidential Administration.

Part of his visit to Rome, Iohannis on Sunday will meet students and teaching staff of Romanian nationality active in Italy at Accademia di Romania. He will deliver a speech on Romania's vision on the future of the European Union.
