President Nicusor Dan stated on Thursday that the energy prices in Romania are too high, but showed confidence that the problems will be corrected in a relatively short timeframe.
According to the head of state, the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) "is not doing its job" in managing market mechanisms.
"If we are talking about the energy area, somehow, there are two problems which are related and an institution which doesn't work. A problem is that the price is too high, despite the fact that Romania produces many of its energy. And when the price is too high, on the one hand, you deprive the client, the end individual, the household, on the other hand, you do not stimulate investments(...) A large part of the industry profitability comes from energy," the President stated at Digi 24 private television station.
According to him, the second problem is represented by the fact that there is a lack of coordination among state-owned companies producing energy. Moreover, Nicusor Dan argued that the ANRE "is not doing its job" in managing market mechanisms.
"The second problem is that we do not have a correlation of the state institutions, of the state-owned companies producing energy and this is something we can fix relatively quickly. (...) All the money from this price goes to some speculators, because the mechanism which should not allow these speculators to make reasonable profits in a market economy, the mechanisms are managed by the ANRE which is not doing its job. In short, this is the energy landscape. The Energy Minister is watching very closely at these things and we hope to correct them in a relatively short timeframe," President Nicusor Dan said.
