The Romanian state took democracy and trampled on it, the independent presidential candidate Calin Georgescu said on Friday, referring to the Constitutional Court's decision to cancel the elections for the position of head of state, informs Agerpres.
"The Romanian state took democracy and trampled on it. Today's decision of the Constitutional Court represents more than a legal controversy. It is practically an officialized coup d'état. The rule of law is in an induced coma and the judiciary, subordinate to political orders, has practically lost its essence. It is no longer Justice. It obeys orders. In such a state, we no longer talk about justice but a simulacrum that betrays the principles of democracy. Democracy is not negotiable. The power of the people is the foundation of the democratic state, because to be sovereign means to respect the other's option, to value the universal vote," Georgescu said in a video message.
In this context, he stated that "our democracy is under attack".
"We see around us party leaders who are trembling with fear. They are scared that they will lose their power and privileges, that the files that will expose them will come to light", argued Calin Georgescu.
The Constitutional Court decided on Friday to cancel the entire electoral process of the presidential elections.
Practically, following this decision, the results of the first round are annulled, and the presidential elections are restarted from scratch.
