The Cotroceni Presidential Palace was illuminated in orange on Tuesday evening marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Presidential Administration informed in a press release posted on its Facebook page.

The Presidential Administration thus joins the international campaign "16 Days of Activism against Violence against Women", which takes place annually between November 25 and December 10, reads the press release, agerpres reports.

"Violence against women is a harsh reality of the Romanian society, and we, both the authorities and the citizens, must work together to support the victims, so that they know they are not alone and that they must ask for help when they are subjected to abuse," reads the message.

In the first 10 months of this year, 57 women lost their lives in Romania as a result of gender-based violence, "a shocking toll that shows these are not isolated incidents, but a failure of the authorities," adds the same source.

"Even when there were protection orders in force, they were not observed or implemented. It is time for the authorities to move from words to deeds: concrete measures, real monitoring, efficient support for victims, so that tragedies are prevented and stopped for good. We need institutions that act promptly, effective public policies and a society that no longer tolerates any form of abuse. No woman should ever fear that tomorrow will never come," the message from the Presidential Administration also emphasises.

The United Nations General Assembly established November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in 2000.
